Toxicity of ascaridole from Chenopodium ambrosioides in mammalian mitochondria
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods Ascaridole was synthesized from alpha-terpinene and characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The toxic effects of these compounds on macrophages from BALB/c mice and on the bioenergetics of submitochondrial particles from bovine heart (SMP) and rat liver mitochondria (RLM) were studied. Toxic radical intermediates arising from the endoperoxide ascaridole were characterized by ESR spectroscopy.

Ascaridole-less infusions of Chenopodium ambrosioides contain a nematocide(s) that is(are) not toxic to mammalian smooth muscle.
Infusions of Chenopodium ambrosioides (L.) have been used for centuries in the Americas as a popular remedy against intestinal worm infections. The essential oil of Chenopodium ambrosioides contains high levels of ascaridole, which is a potent anthelmintic, but which has also been responsible for human fatalities, leading to its disuse. Almost 90% of the nematocidal activity of Chenopodium ambr...

BACKGROUND The efficacy of essential oil of Chenopodium ambrosioides flowering aerial parts and its three main active ingredients was evaluated against Blattella germanica male adults. METHODS Composition of essential oil was determined by GC-MS. Topical application bioassay was used to evaluate contact toxicity of essential oil and three main components. Fumigant toxicity of essential oil an...
متن کاملAmoebicidal Activity of Essential Oil of Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants in an Amoebic Liver Abscess Hamster Model
Amebiasis is a parasitic disease that extends worldwide and is a public health problem in developing countries. Metronidazole is the drug recommended in the treatment of amebiasis, but its contralateral effects and lack of continuity of treatment induce low efficiency, coupled with the appearance of resistant amoebic strains. Therefore, the search of new compounds with amoebicidal activity is u...
متن کاملComparative chemical, cytotoxicity and antileishmanial properties of essential oils from Chenopodium ambrosioides.
In countries where leishmaniasis is endemic, there are not very many treatment alternatives and most options have problems associated with their use. Plants and their natural products constitute good sources of interesting lead compounds that could be potentially active against Leishmania. Chenopodium ambrosioides is a plant that is widely used in popular medicine and its antiparasitic effects ...
متن کاملChenopodium ambrosioides L. Reduces Synovial Inflammation and Pain in Experimental Osteoarthritis.
The chronicity of osteoarthritis (OA), characterized by pain and inflammation in the joints, is linked to a glutamate receptor, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). The use of plant species such as Chenopodium ambrosioides L. (Amaranthaceae) as NMDA antagonists offers a promising perspective. This work aims to analyze the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory responses of the crude hydroalcoholic extra...
